The Monroe Fighting Hornets will take on the Bellbrook Golden Eagles in Girls Division II Southwest District 2013 Sectional/District basketball tournament. The game will be played at Lebanon High School at 7:00 PM. The Hornets come in the tournament with a record of 2-19 and Bellbrook has record of 17-2. Monroe is 0-2 vs Bellbrook. The Hornets have 4 seniors and 3 juniors on their roster. The Golden Eagles have 3 seniors, 4 juniors, 3 sophmores, and 2 freshman on their roster. The Golden Eagles were Division A State Qualifiers in 1976 and Division II in 2012. The Golden Eagles have something to prove in order to win the State Championship.

The game was underway after the singing of the National Anthem and player introductions. The Golden Eagles looked relaxed and ready to play as did the Hornets. The game starts with Bellbrook winning the tip off and creates a turnover on their first possession of the game. Both teams started slow by creating turnovers. That did last long for the Golden Eagles. Hanna Songer got opened and drained a 3 point shot. The Hornets would come back with a 2 point basketball of their own by Aubrie Justice. Early in the first period the score 9-4 and Hornets would never be close in the game again. The Golden Eagles applied defensive pressure whenever the Hornets tried to setup their offensive plays. They forced 15 turnovers and after the first quarter the score was
33 to 4. The Hornets had no answer how to get a game rhythm going. Coach Phillips would called numerous timeouts try to stop the momentum of the Golden Eagles. The Golden Eagles had the inside and outside game working. As a team, the Golden Eagles were able to connect on 8 3-point goals.
At the start of the second period it was more of the same. The Hornets continued to make ball handling mistakes which led to easy baskets by the Golden Eagles. The Hornets could not compete with the Golden Eagles. The Golden Eagles made smart passes and very few turnovers in the second period to extend their lead to 56-10 at the half. They also took of advantage of fast break opportunities for easy scores.
The 3 and 4 periods it appeared the Hornets were getting some rhythm in their game. They started making layups and perimeter shots. They also were able to force the Golden Eagles into a few mistakes. In the 3 and 4 period the Golden Eagles had 9 turnovers compared to 6 in the first half. The Golden Eagles were to rebound the well the entire game. The Hornets had 10 defensive rebounds and 4 offensive rebounds. The Golden Eagles had 11 defensive rebounds and 6 offensive reounds for the game. The Golden Eagles went on numerous unanswered point scoring runs to defeat the Hornets in a final score of 92-30. The Golden Eagles had 4 players in double figures. The leading scorer was junior Chea Taylor with 22 points. Followed senior Erin Doren with 19 points.
The Golden Eagles head to the next round were their opponent will Belmont. The Golden Eagles looked pretty impressive tonight and it looks like no team can stop them in these early rounds of the tournament. They are definitely a team to watch! Coach Tincher seems to have the team peaking at the right time.
The next game they may hit the century mark in points scored.
