The evolution of ESPN
According to the text ,Bill Rasmussen brought charismatic and compelling broadcasters to the network. Their first broadcast was September 7, 1979 and it is the largest cable network in the U.S. with 40 business entities. According to thesop.org, the original creation of ESPN was an alternative to information found in the "Sports" sections of newspapers. There are more than 90 viewers of ESPN. This media giant covers sports from every media source with includes, radio, print, broadband, wireless, and on demand(Pedersen et al,2008 p.64). ESPN offers various programming and entertainment such as The Sports Reporter, Pardon the Interruption(PTI), just to name a few. These programs offer fans a different perspective of the world of sports. The revenue that ESPN brings in is astronomical. All sports teams want to have ESPN cover their team.
For individuals that like to communicate with other about sports they can log on to https://twitter.com/espn and set up an account. According to the ESPN twitter account, as of 1/20/13, there over 5 million ESPN twitter followers. It's apparent a lot sports fans want to voice their opinion about what is going on in the world sports.
ESPN has truly brought sports to the "die hard" fan. It's all about sports at ESPN!

CHICAGO SPORTS
The online newspaper I selected to compare are the Brazil Sun (http://www.brazilsun.com/ )and Chicago Tribune (http://www.chicagotribune.com/.) In reviewing the Brazil Sun sports section most news stories focused on the sport of soccer. There was a subtitled fitness news section. Advertising post included MetroStar a company that provides hotel, apartment, and resort lodging. Another company with an ad was vm Workstation 9.
The Chicago Tribune sports section included similar stories related to soccer. Differences in the sports section include articles about various professional sports teams such as the Chicago White Sox, Chicago Bulls, and the Chicago Blackhawks. Also included high school and golf categories. Advertising links posted to this site are Target.com, Value City Furniture, Big Lots, and SmartUSA,
The content of this video highlighted the massive global communication center provided to journalist during the 2008 Beijing Olympics. According to the CNN video, A working center had over 900 stations where Journalist could access the internet, help desk, and watch the games live. A computer data base was provided to access information about athletes and events. This was a mecca center for journalist to communicate every detail of was happening at the Olympics. According to video, Journalist were disappointed to find out how rigorous the security check point, securing a visa, and credentialing experience was. Chinese officials had promised free and reporting as stated in video.
A most interesting article about the censorship in Beijing states, that an IOC official admitted that some International Olympic Committee officials cut a deal to let China block sensitive websites despite promises of unrestricted access (Graham,2008). Another revealing fact is some IOC officials negotiated with the Chinese that some sensitive sites would be blocked on the basis that they were not considered Games related (Graham, 2008). This was most surprising to read. The IOC caved in to the Chinese government.

Sports Celebrity Endorsement Micheal Strahan former NFL player for the NEW York Gaints endorses or has endorsed Subway, Pizza Hut, Snickers, and Right Guard. Michael Strahan is also the co-host of Live! With Kelly and Michael and commentator for ESPN. Michael has a personality that is likable and sincere. His decision to endorse Subway has been beneficial in his career. Subway is a very popular sandwich chain that most agree is better fast food choice. His popularity on the football field made him a good choice for Subway as an endorser. Michael is active in charitable organizations such as St. Jude Game Day. Give Back and The Michael Strahan Foundation.
According to newsone.com, In 2012 his ex-wife, Jean Muggli accused him of assault, neglecting their twin daughters. He was involved in a bitter divorce from her. She also made accusations that he was gay. This controversy with his ex- wife appears to have not damaged his appeal and popularity. The public may not be overly concerned about his private life. This is a very gray area for athletes with endorsement deals. Depending on the situation some athletes endorsement deals are terminated.
Michael has recently voiced his support for same sex relationships. This was surprising because of how it may influence his endorsments deals. It appears that no company that he endorses has severed ties with him. Michael appears be a firm believer of voicing his views and opinions no matter what the consquences.
Michael truly has a personality that enables him to connect with people.

Recruiting and Fund Raising
I never realized that recruiting and fundraising had so many similarities. The similarities pointed out in the article covers 11 distinctive areas:
1. Pool of prospects 7. Personal connections
2. Qualifying the pool of prospects 8. Personal visit to make the hit
3. "Ability" and "Fit" 9. Final stage
4. Contact with the prospect 10. Stewardship
5. Research the prospect 11. The continuous process
6. Personal contact with the prospect
Fundraising determines how successful and organization is. It is an arduous task of knowing how to the select the right financial supporters for an organization. Successful fundraising means that an organization has effectively solicited financial support from the right individuals. The most important topic covered is fundraising needs to be a continuous process with contributors. Once a relationship is established with a contributor this relationship should maintained. An organization such as Ohio State Univeristy has a good fundraising program. On ww.osu.edu, february 2012, it was reported," A new national survey of public and private universities ranks The Ohio State Univerisity 10th among public universities in the United States for total private support based on a three-year average, up from 11th last year. Ohio State was named top univeristy in Ohio for fundraising. Ohio State alumnus and former Board of Trustees Chair Leslie H. Wexner and the Limited Brands Foundation committed $100 million to the university, the larget gift in its history". It was somewhat surprising that Ohio State was ranked higher with how popular the university is and the number of alumnus. I was not surprised to read that it is top fundraising school in Ohio.

Junior Seau
The NFL had a great player in Junior Seau. He played for three NFL teams the San Diego Chargers (1990-2002),Miami Dolphins (2003-2005),and New England Patriots (2006-2009). This NFL player tragically ended his own life with a gun shot to the chest last May.
This news sent shock waves through the sports world. People asked what would cause Seau to take his own life? It has been confirmed in a study by the National Institute of Health, that he suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a neurodegenerative disease associated with repetitive head injuries (Chappell,2013). Other players that have committed suicide are Dave Duerson and Ray Easterling. In light of this problem last September, the NFL said it would donate $30 million dollars to the National Institutes of Health to support research on athletes' medical conditions, this list would include brain injuries and traumatic encephalopathy (Chappell,2013).
It appears that NFL has to respond to these incidents as a crisis situation. Players are demanding that they are provided with the necessary equipment to protect them from brain injuries. The NFL claims the former and current players have health programs. Programs include joint replacement, neurological evaluations and spine treatment programs, assist living partnerships, long-term care insurance, prescriptions benefits, life insurance programs, and Medicare supplement program (FoxNews.com,20112012). Some players feel that this is not enough and the NFL has not informed players of the long risk of brain trauma and other medical conditions associated with blows to the head.
NFL players Jamal Lewis and Dorsey Levens and two other former NFL players have sued the NFL over brain injuries. They are struggling with medical problem years after playing football(FoxNews.com,2011). This could be costly for the league in legal fees. Helmet manufacturer Riddell is being sued by Junior Seau's family(nationalgeographic.com,2013) The players feel that they a legitimate claim and NFL is firm in stating that they have done every to provide for the safety of NFL players.
The NFL has partnered with the U.S. Military to help design a helmet that is more shock absorbing to protect NFL players from concussions and other brain injuries. A couple years ago, the NFL and other sports leagues gathered in New York with members of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to protective technology. The exchange of informant between the NFL and military continues to this day(nationalgeographic.com2013)
This has been a media nightmare for the NFL because of the player lawsuits and not responding in a proactive to protect the players. The off season should hopefully continue the conversation about player safety.

Sports teams or agencies can maximize social media resources like twitter and Facebook by having consumers stay connected. Consumers should have the opportunity to have access to information that will benefit them. When consumers can stay connected with their favorite team or business this means a possibility of more profits for a company. To have a competitive advantage companies are using Facebook and Twitter to inform consumers about sales and upcoming promotions. If a company is not using these social media sites they missing out on increase sales opportunities and new customers.
Future of Sports Communication
The future of sports communication will continue to make exciting transformations for the avid sports fan. Sports communication offers various mediums of reporting coverage to sports consumers. There are sports consumers that rely on radio, magazines, network television, cable and satellite, internet and mobile streaming. How sports fans experience sports coverage has made progressive changes. Sports fans have unprecedented access to sporting events that no one ever imagined could happen. I never imagined the sporting industry would be a multibillion-dollar worldwide industry( Rein, et. al.).
The explosion of the technology has created the opportunity for coverage of sporting events that occur 24/7/365. Cable Channels, Single Sports Channels, Satellite TV Packages, Regional Sports Networks, Team Owned all attempting to gain an competitive advantage to lure as many sports consumers as they possibly can. This gives sports consumers choices when they are not satisfied with one organization another one is available to switch to. Sports consumers that do not purchase premium sports networks are still able to enjoy and participate in conversation about the feats of talented athletes at their favorite sports bar or at someone's home. I recall watching the Chicago Bulls in the early years of Michael Jordan at sports bars. Because there is so much money to made in sports coverage, television networks are constantly competing with each other to offer sports organization irresistible rights fees.According to espn.go.com in 2011,the league's traditional broadcast partners embraced a deal that sends their rights fees up. CBS, Fox and NBC renewed their contracts for nine years through the 2022 season. Sports organizations no longer completely rely on networks to offer bids to television programming rights. For example, the NFL has established its own network to that competed with against ESPN with it own NFL draft show and broadcast of eight regular season games in the 2006 season( Rein, et. al).
Sports communication is not just limited to television coverage. The expansion of sports communication has gone "viral" in the 21st century. Sports organizations have developed sophisticated means of internet streaming. Sports consumers can now access sporting events from their mobile device, desk or laptop computers. This would have been totally unheard decades ago. Many avid sport consumers are willing to make a monetary investment to subscribe to this service in order to stay informed about the progress of their favorite teams. This service will continue to improve in the future as technology improves. Social media such as facebook, twitter, just to name will definitely continue help expand sports communication into the future. Many sports commentators/broadcasters have twitter and facebook accounts to communicate with fans.
With all that has been stated, it appears the future of sports communication has a bright future. The expansion of Manchester United, the billion-dollar English football(soccer) developing its own television channel, radio station, magazine, mobile phone service, just to name a few is just incredible(Rein, et. al). This is an example how many different opportunities there are for expansion in sports communication.
The field of sports communication has become very competitive in the entertainment market. Professional, college, and even high school are continuing to improve methods of providing access to information that avid sports consumers want.
